Chapter Thirteen

Protection

Jay and Fleur didn’t spend any time talking about what had happened during their walk. The fact they’d almost kissed had been, to Jay, a revelation. Since Melanie was the only other woman he’d ever wanted to kiss, he wasn’t sure what to make of such an unexpected development. Sure, he could always blame the whole event on hormones, but hadn’t there been something more to it than that? Fleur, after all, was older—and a woman—so surely she wasn’t as much a victim of her biology as he was. And he hadn’t imagined it—she’d leaned in, too. Even though she’d been the one to push him away in the end, there could be no denying she’d wanted to kiss him, even if she wouldn’t admit it to herself.

Jay couldn’t remember the last time he’d been so confused around a girl; no, a woman. Even his strange, brief encounter with Shante at the lake when he was twelve had been simpler.

Fleur was undeniably professional as she administered their treatments, ran tests, and checked their vitals. Even when it was just the two of them, she didn’t bring up what had happened―what had almost happened. Jay had no idea what to think about that. He’d never been so confused, and it was all over a girl―the last thing he should’ve been thinking about, given his current situation. He couldn’t deny his interest in her―it was far above the level of professional curiosity. If his friends or his sister noticed his strange behavior around Fleur, they sure didn’t say anything. For that small kindness, he was grateful.

“Open wide,” Fleur said. They were back in the laboratory for what felt like the hundredth time. He was sitting on the counter while she leaned against it. The sterile, antiseptic smell was as familiar to him as the scent of her perfume. For the longest time, he’d hated hospitals. Everything about them—from the smell of the disinfectant spray to the steady beeping of machinery and the stark-white hallways—got under his skin and rubbed against his nerves. Now that he’d become accustomed to sitting in a lab, the idea of a hospital wasn’t half bad. The same scents that had sickened him once were now part of his routine. There was no escaping them.

Jay opened his mouth and stuck out his tongue. Fleur slipped the cool glass thermometer back against his teeth. It was difficult to resist the urge to bite down, shatter the casing, and fill his mouth with lethal mercury—an easier way out. He’d nearly escaped having the thermometer stuck somewhere more unpleasant, as per Fleur’s suggestion. Who cared which one was more accurate? Either way, he was dying, burning from the inside out. Ebola-II had stuck its claws in him. It wasn’t letting go until he gave up and it killed him.

As Fleur leaned against the counter, crossed her arms, and waited for the thermometer to process Jay’s temperature, she studied him and pursed her lips. It was the second time he’d caught her doing that.
